An afternoon of tragedy inside a south Indianapolis home ended the life of Salai Biaklian Thang, an 18-year-old student remembered as a beloved member of his family and the city’s Chin community. His death on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, left his friends, classmates, and fellow church members in profound grief. Those who knew him recall a young man who formed meaningful connections through his family life, education, and community involvement.

The fatal incident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. inside a residence in the 7500 block of Jenison Drive, located in the Cheyenne Lakes at Southern Dune subdivision near Interstate 69 and Southport Road. According to reports, Salai was with a group of friends in an upstairs bedroom handling a firearm. The gun discharged, and Salai was struck. One report indicated that the friends were handling a gun they did not know was loaded when it went off, striking Salai in the head.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the home following a 911 call. Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) arrived to find Salai with an apparent gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition but was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival. The Marion County Coroner's Office later officially identified him and began working to determine the exact cause and manner of death.

Homicide detectives from the IMPD were called to the scene to lead the investigation. While preliminary information suggested the shooting may have been accidental, authorities are treating the case as a potential negligent or reckless manslaughter. Investigators detained and questioned several people who were at the home at the time of the shooting. After consulting with the Marion County Prosecutor's Office, those individuals were released pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation. No arrests have been made or charges filed.

In the days following the tragedy, Salai’s community gathered to mourn his sudden loss. He was a member of the Zophei Baptist Church in Indianapolis, which announced his passing to the congregation and asked for prayers for his grieving family. The church, referring to him by his nickname "Aibur," hosted a memorial service and a family service on October 1st and 2nd. A final viewing and funeral service were held on October 3, 2026, as his loved ones came together to honor his memory and offer support to one another.

As of early October 2026, the investigation into Salai Biaklian Thang's death remains active. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department continues to examine the circumstances that led to the shooting. Detectives ask that anyone with information about the incident contact IMPD Detective Daniel Hiatt at 317-327-3475 or via email.
