John Agege, a man remembered for his confident and loving nature, grew up in Houston, Texas. He attended Jack Yates High School in the city’s Third Ward, where he was a running back for the Lions varsity football team. He was part of the graduating class of 2010. Friends and family knew the 34-year-old as a silly and sometimes headstrong person who went by nicknames like "Gotti" and "Gaga." His life, however, also included a significant encounter with the criminal justice system. In 2010, Agege’s fingerprints were found on a clipboard used during an aggravated robbery. A 17-year-old high school basketball star had been wrongly identified by two victims and arrested for the crime. After the fingerprint match, Agege confessed to the robbery, which led to the exoneration of the innocent teenager who had spent four days in jail and was facing the possibility of a life sentence.

The final day of John Agege’s life came on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, in north Harris County. Just before noon, Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the Signature Inn Motel in the 13600 block of Rankin Circle West. An altercation, which investigators later described as stemming from an apparent drug transaction, had escalated to violence. During the dispute, Agege was shot.

In the immediate aftermath, a witness at the motel attempted to drive Agege to a hospital. Their private vehicle was intercepted only a block away from the scene by an emergency medical services crew. Paramedics took over medical care and rushed Agege to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, the gunshot wound proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced deceased by the hospital's medical staff.

Homicide detectives from the Harris County Sheriff's Office began an immediate investigation at the motel. By interviewing several witnesses who were at the scene, they quickly identified a suspect in the shooting: 22-year-old Kameron Jaquwan Cooper. A coordinated effort was launched to find him, involving the Harris County Violent Criminals Apprehension Team, the HCSO District 1 Crime Reduction Team, and the Texas Department of Public Safety's Criminal Investigations Division.

The joint law enforcement effort successfully located Cooper a short time later. He was taken into custody without incident. During questioning by investigators, Cooper reportedly admitted that he was the one who had shot John Agege during the confrontation at the motel.

Following his confession, Kameron Jaquwan Cooper was arrested and formally charged with murder. He was booked into the Harris County Jail to await legal proceedings. As of late 2026, the case against him was moving through the Texas court system.
