Jose Leon was 45 years old when he died on Wednesday, March 27, 2019, in the Westlake neighborhood of Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died of stab wounds at 141 S. Alvarado St. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a case of the Los Angeles Police Department's Rampart Division.

The Los Angeles Times Homicide Report described what police said happened that evening. "About 8:30 p.m., Leon got into an argument with multiple people outside the lobby of a nearby motel," said Los Angeles police Det. Ray Martinez. "One of the people pulled out a knife and stabbed Leon, then fled in a sedan." Leon was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:58 p.m., according to coroner's records.

The report added several details. Leon lived in the area, and Martinez "said the killing is not connected to gangs." The Times also noted that "it's unknown why the argument began." That description suggests that the people involved may have been strangers to him, or acquaintances whose quarrel escalated quickly, but the public record does not say which.

The account leaves much unknown. It does not describe the person who held the knife, how many people were in the group, or whether the others stayed or left with the attacker. It does not describe the sedan beyond the word itself. Still, the fact that the stabbing happened in the early evening outside a motel lobby on a busy street suggests that guests, staff, passersby or drivers may have seen part of the confrontation.

Beyond his name, age and the place where he was hurt, almost nothing about Jose Leon's life has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser that can be confirmed as his was found for this story. Jose Leon is a very common name, shared by baseball players, students, business owners and men in obituaries from New York to Texas to Illinois, and none of them can be connected to this death in Westlake. That commonness has made it almost impossible for any trace of this particular man to surface in public records. He surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember him.

Westlake is one of the most densely populated neighborhoods in Los Angeles, just west of downtown. It is centered on MacArthur Park and filled with apartment buildings, older hotels and motels, street vendors and small shops. Alvarado Street is one of its main north-south corridors, busy with buses, pedestrians and traffic at most hours.

Los Angeles recorded about 260 homicides a year in 2018 and 2019, among the lowest yearly totals in more than half a century, yet many of those killings still went unsolved.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Jose Leon could be found in news archives or public records. More than six years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who was on or near South Alvarado Street in Westlake on the evening of March 27, 2019, especially near the motel, or who saw a sedan leave the area that night, may hold information that could help detectives. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. The Times asked anyone with information to call Det. Martinez at 484-3642. Anyone with information can call the Los Angeles Police Department at 877-527-3247 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
