Jaime Barrios was 44 years old when he died on Saturday, June 16, 2001, in an area listed by the coroner as Gardena. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma at 900 W. 182nd Street. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles Police Department case handled by the department's Harbor Division.

He was a Latino man in his mid-40s. Beyond his name, his age and the place where he died, almost nothing about Jaime Barrios has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on the death. He surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember who he was, but none of that has entered the public record. His name is a common one in the Spanish-speaking world, and searches turned up only other men who share it, among them a Chilean filmmaker who worked in New York and a man whose family's benefits claim reached the Supreme Court of the Philippines.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether he was beaten in a fight, attacked by a stranger, assaulted indoors or on the street, or struck by a vehicle, all of which can lead to a finding of blunt force trauma. It does not say what time of day he was hurt, whether he died at the scene or later at a hospital, whether anyone saw what happened, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect.

Although the record lists Gardena, the case was assigned to the Los Angeles Police Department rather than to the Gardena police. That suggests the address lies in the Harbor Gateway, the long, narrow strip of the city of Los Angeles that runs south from the rest of the city to connect it with San Pedro and Wilmington and the port. Many homes and businesses in that strip carry Gardena or Torrance mailing addresses even though they are inside city limits,. The area around 182nd Street is a mix of small houses, apartment buildings, light industry and commercial streets, home to many working families.

Because the Harbor Gateway sits far from the city's center and is surrounded on both sides by other cities, crimes there have often received little attention. Homicides in Los Angeles rose sharply in the early 2000s, climbing past 600 in 2002, and detectives carried heavy caseloads. Many killings from those years were never solved. The death of a 44-year-old man from blunt force injuries does not appear to have been reported by any news outlet.

Neighbors, coworkers or friends of a man in his 40s may still remember that weekend, and someone may know what led to his death.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Jaime Barrios could be found in news archives or public records. More than 24 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who lived or worked near West 182nd Street in June 2001, or who knew him, may hold information that could help detectives. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can call the Los Angeles Police Department at 877-527-3247 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
