Antonio Santamaria was 32 years old when he died on Sunday, November 18, 2001, in Florence-Firestone, an unincorporated community in South Los Angeles County. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma at 1254 East 77th Street. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department case.

He was a Latino man in his early 30s. Beyond his name, his age and the place where he died, almost nothing about Antonio Santamaria has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on the death. He surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember who he was, but none of that has entered the public record. Antonio Santamaria is a fairly common name in the Spanish-speaking world, and searches turned up only other men who share it, none of them connected to this case.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether he was beaten in a fight, attacked by a stranger, assaulted indoors or on the street, or struck by a vehicle, all of which can lead to a finding of blunt force trauma. It does not say what time of day he was hurt, whether he died at the scene or later at a hospital, whether anyone saw what happened, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect. The record gives a street address on East 77th Street, which suggests he may have been hurt in or near a home, but it does not say whether he lived there.

Florence-Firestone is not a city. It is an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County, surrounded by the city of Los Angeles and by small cities of the southeast county, and its police protection comes from the Sheriff's Department rather than the Los Angeles Police Department. The community grew up in the early 20th century around rail lines and factories. Today it is a dense, working-class community of small homes, apartment buildings and corner stores, and the great majority of its residents are Latino.

A death at a residential address on a Sunday is the kind of event that neighbors notice. Someone on the block may have heard an argument or seen people coming and going that day, and may not have realized that what they saw was connected to a death.

Hundreds of people are killed in Los Angeles County every year, and a large share of those killings end without an arrest. The death of a 32-year-old man from blunt force injuries received only a brief entry in the Los Angeles Times Homicide Report, and no news story about him appears to have been published.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Antonio Santamaria could be found in news archives or public records. More than 24 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who lived on or near East 77th Street in Florence-Firestone in November 2001, or who knew Antonio, may hold information that could help detectives. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
