John David Garcia De Leon was 40 years old when he died on Sunday, December 28, 2003, in Los Angeles County. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma, and his death was ruled a homicide. The Los Angeles Times Homicide Report, which listed his death, gives no address or neighborhood for where he was hurt and does not name the agency that investigated it.

The entry was brief even by the standards of the Homicide Report. It described him as "a 40-year-old Latino male" who "died Sunday, Dec. 28, after sustaining blunt force trauma."

Beyond his name, his age and the place where he died, almost nothing about John David Garcia De Leon has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on the death. He surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember who he was, but none of that has entered the public record. His full name, with two surnames, is distinctive, but searches for it return nothing connected to him, and searches for shorter forms such as John De Leon or John Leon turn up only other men, among them an architect and men memorialized in other states.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether he was beaten in a fight, attacked by a stranger, assaulted indoors or on the street, or struck by a vehicle, all of which can lead to a finding of blunt force trauma. It does not say what time of day he was hurt, whether he died at the scene or later at a hospital, whether anyone saw what happened, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect.

He died in the quiet days between Christmas and New Year's, a time when families gather and many people are away from work. The missing location is itself unusual. Most entries in the Homicide Report give at least a block or an intersection, and the absence of one here may mean the details were never released, or that he was injured somewhere other than where he died. The record also does not say whether the Los Angeles Police Department, the Sheriff's Department or a city police department took the case.

Los Angeles County is home to roughly 10 million people spread across the city of Los Angeles, dozens of smaller cities and large unincorporated areas. Without a place, it is impossible to say which neighborhood or which community is connected to this death.

Hundreds of people are killed in Los Angeles County every year, and a large share of those killings end without an arrest.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of John David Garcia De Leon could be found in news archives or public records. More than 22 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who knew John, a man of 40 in late 2003, or who saw him during the Christmas holidays that year, may hold information that could help investigators. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS or contact the Los Angeles Police Department at 877-527-3247 or the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.
