Case Description

Any updates on this case? Let us know!
Gustavo Vela was 27 years old when he died on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a West Covina Police Department case.

The Los Angeles Times Homicide Report recorded his death in a short entry drawn from coroner's records. It gave his age, described him as a Latino man and listed the date he died. It did not give an address, a neighborhood or any account of what happened. The only clue to where he was hurt is the agency listed on the case, which points to the city of West Covina in the San Gabriel Valley.

Beyond his name, his age and the date of his death, almost nothing about Gustavo Vela has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on the death. He surely had family, friends or coworkers who remember who he was, but none of that has entered the public record.

One public genealogy record may offer a small detail. It lists a Gustavo Vela of Glendale, in Los Angeles County, who was born on Feb. 21, 1979, and died on Feb. 22, 2006, at the age of 27. The age and date match this case. If that record is about the same man, he died one day after his 27th birthday, and he may have lived some distance from the place where he was hurt. That cannot be confirmed from the record alone. His name is a common one, and other searches turned up only namesakes in Texas, Mexico and elsewhere, none of them connected to this death.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether he was beaten in a fight, attacked by a stranger, assaulted indoors or on the street, or struck by a vehicle, all of which can lead to a finding of blunt force trauma. It does not say what time of day he was hurt, whether he died at the scene or later at a hospital, whether anyone saw what happened, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect.

West Covina is a suburban city in the San Gabriel Valley, east of Los Angeles, crossed by the San Bernardino Freeway. It is known for its residential neighborhoods of single-family homes, its large shopping mall and its busy commercial streets, and it has its own police department rather than relying on the Sheriff's Department.

Hundreds of people are killed in Los Angeles County every year, and a large share of those killings end without an arrest.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Gustavo Vela could be found in news archives or public records. More than 19 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who knew a 27-year-old man named Gustavo Vela in February 2006, or who remembers hearing about a young man who was beaten or badly hurt in West Covina around that time, may hold information that could help. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can contact the West Covina Police Department, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
