Rafael Mendiaz was 17 years old when he died on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007, on the Eastside of Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma at a location that was never made public. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a case of the Los Angeles Police Department's Hollenbeck Division.

The Los Angeles Times Homicide Report recorded his death in one sentence: Rafael Mendiaz, "a 17-year-old Latino male," died that Saturday "after sustaining blunt force trauma." The entry did not say where he was hurt, what happened to him or whether anyone was being sought, and no follow-up appears to have been published.

The only other public trace found for this story is a genealogy listing on the AncientFaces website. It records a Rafael Mendiaz who was born on Aug. 15, 1990, and who "died at age 17 years old on December 15, 2007." The dates match the Times entry exactly, which suggests the listing is drawn from the death records of this same young man.

Beyond that, almost nothing about Rafael Mendiaz has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found, and no news outlet appears to have reported on the killing. He was still a teenager, likely of high school age, and he surely had family, classmates and friends who remember him, but none of that has entered the public record.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether he was beaten in a fight, attacked by a stranger, assaulted indoors or on the street, or struck by a vehicle, all of which can lead to a finding of blunt force trauma. It does not say what time of day he was hurt, whether he died at the scene or later at a hospital, whether anyone saw what happened, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect.

Mendiaz is an uncommon surname, which means that anyone who knew him, or knew his family, would likely recognize the name at once.

The Hollenbeck Division polices the neighborhoods east of the Los Angeles River, including Boyle Heights, Lincoln Heights and El Sereno. Boyle Heights, the best known of them, is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city and has been the heart of Mexican American Los Angeles for generations. Its streets are lined with older homes, apartment buildings, murals, taco stands and family businesses, and Mariachi Plaza on First Street is one of its landmarks. Because the Times gave no address, it is not known in which of these neighborhoods he was hurt.

Homicides in Los Angeles fell steeply in the late 2000s and early 2010s, yet many killings from those years were never solved.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Rafael Mendiaz could be found in news archives or public records. More than 18 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Someone who lived on the Eastside in mid-December 2007, or who went to school with a 17-year-old named Rafael Mendiaz, may remember what happened to him that weekend or who he was with. Classmates, teachers, neighbors and relatives may also hold details that were never made public. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can call the Los Angeles Police Department at 877-527-3247 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
