Soo Hui Kang was 67 years old when she died on Tuesday, April 8, 2008, in Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, she died after sustaining blunt force trauma. The coroner's entry published by the Los Angeles Times does not give the address where she was hurt. Her death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles Police Department Newton Division case.

Beyond her name, her age and the place where she died, almost nothing about Soo Hui Kang has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on the death. She surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember who she was, but none of that has entered the public record.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether she was beaten in a fight, attacked by a stranger, assaulted indoors or on the street, or struck by a vehicle, all of which can lead to a finding of blunt force trauma. It does not say what time of day she was hurt, whether she died at the scene or later at a hospital, whether anyone saw what happened, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect.

The record does not even say where in the Newton Division she was found, whether in a home, a business or on the street. Kang is a common surname, and searches for her name turn up only other people, including doctors and researchers in South Korea and people named in obituaries in other states. None of them could be tied to the 67-year-old woman who died in Los Angeles in April 2008. It is possible that she was known in her community by a different spelling of her name or by an English name, which would make any memorial harder to find.

The Newton Division covers part of South Los Angeles, southeast of downtown. Its station sits on Central Avenue, the historic corridor that was once the center of Black business and jazz life in Los Angeles, and the area includes busy commercial streets, small factories and warehouses, and dense neighborhoods of older homes and apartments.

Homicides in Los Angeles fell steeply in the late 2000s and early 2010s, yet many killings from those years were never solved.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Soo Hui Kang could be found in news archives or public records. More than 17 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Investigators may still hold information that has never been released, and detectives in Los Angeles have solved older killings with the help of new forensic testing or a witness who finally decided to speak.

Someone who lived or worked in the Newton Division area in April 2008, or who knew Soo Hui Kang through family, church, work or her neighborhood, may remember who she was in contact with or what happened in the days before she died. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can call the Los Angeles Police Department at 877-527-3247 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
