Luis Pierson was 42 years old when he died on Thursday, July 30, 2009, four days after he was beaten in Lennox, an unincorporated community in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma at West 104th Street and Firmona Avenue. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department case handled by the Homicide Bureau.

According to the Los Angeles Times Homicide Report, Luis was assaulted on Sunday, July 26, at the intersection of West 104th Street and Firmona Avenue. Craig Harvey, chief coroner investigator, told the Times that Luis went to the emergency room on the day he was attacked and was discharged. Three days later, paramedics took him to the hospital again. He had suffered a ruptured spleen, Harvey said, and it caused his death the following day.

The Times described his death as resulting from "complications suffered from a beating." The account suggests that the seriousness of his injury was not recognized at first, and that the internal bleeding may have worsened over several days before it became fatal. A death caused by injuries that another person inflicted can be ruled a homicide even when it comes days later, which is why his case was counted among the county's killings that summer.

Beyond those details, almost nothing about Luis Pierson has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet other than the Times appears to have reported on the death. Searches for his name turned up only unrelated historical and academic references. He surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember him, but none of that has entered the public record.

The record does not say who beat Luis or why. It does not say whether he knew his attacker, whether the assault was a fight, a robbery or something else, or whether he was able to tell doctors or deputies what had happened when he first went to the emergency room. Because he was treated and released, there may have been a hospital record of his visit, and he may have spoken to people about the assault in the days before he died.

Lennox is a small, densely populated unincorporated community just east of Los Angeles International Airport, next to the cities of Inglewood and Hawthorne. Jets approaching the airport pass low over its streets, and its neighborhoods are made up mostly of small houses and apartment buildings. Because Lennox is not part of any city, it is policed by the Sheriff's Department.

Hundreds of people are killed in Los Angeles County every year, and a large share of those killings end without an arrest.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Luis Pierson could be found in news archives or public records. More than 16 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who was near West 104th Street and Firmona Avenue in Lennox on Sunday, July 26, 2009, or who spoke with Luis in the days before he died, may hold information that could help detectives. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
