Case Description

Any updates on this case? Let us know!
Julio Jimmy Garcia was 57 years old when he died on Tuesday, February 4, 2014, in Green Meadows, a neighborhood of South Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma near East 116th Street and South Avalon Boulevard. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles Police Department Criminal Gang Homicide Division case.

The Los Angeles Times Homicide Report recorded his death with only the basic facts drawn from coroner's records: his name, his age, the date, the place and the cause. The report did not describe what happened to him, and no police statement or news story about the case could be found. The assignment of the case to the LAPD's Criminal Gang Homicide Division, which handles killings in much of South Los Angeles, does not by itself say that gangs were involved, and nothing in the record explains the circumstances.

Beyond his name, his age and the place where he died, almost nothing about Julio Jimmy Garcia has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on the death. He surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember who he was, but none of that has entered the public record. Julio Garcia is one of the most common names in the Spanish-speaking world and searches turn up records of many other men in other states and countries. None of them can be tied to the 57-year-old who died in South Los Angeles. The middle name Jimmy, which appears in the coroner's record, may have been the name family and friends used for him, but that cannot be confirmed.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether he was beaten in a fight, attacked by a stranger, assaulted indoors or on the street, or struck by a vehicle, all of which can lead to a finding of blunt force trauma. It does not say what time of day he was hurt, whether he died at the scene or later at a hospital, whether anyone saw what happened, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect.

Green Meadows is a neighborhood of South Los Angeles. It is a working-class area made up largely of single-family homes and small apartment buildings, with corner stores, churches and small businesses along its main streets. Avalon Boulevard is one of the long north-south streets that cross South Los Angeles, carrying buses and steady traffic through the neighborhoods it passes.

By the mid-2010s Los Angeles was recording roughly 250 to 300 homicides a year, among the lowest totals in decades, yet many of those killings still went unsolved.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Julio Jimmy Garcia could be found in news archives or public records. More than 11 years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who lived or worked near 116th Street and Avalon Boulevard in early February 2014, or who knew a 57-year-old man named Julio Garcia who went by Jimmy, may hold information that could help detectives. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can call the Los Angeles Police Department at 877-527-3247 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
