Geoffrey Koness was 32 years old when he died on Tuesday, May 30, 2017, in Winnetka. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma at Corbin Street and the 19700 block of Sherman Way. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a Los Angeles Police Department Valley Bureau Homicide case.

The coroner's records describe him as a white man in his early 30s. A website that compiles coroner case information later summarized his death, giving the cause as "blunt force trauma to the head" and describing him as having been intoxicated at the time. Beyond that, almost nothing about him has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found, and no news outlet appears to have reported on his death. His surname is rare, and public directories list a Geoffrey Koness in Northridge and Porter Ranch, which suggests that he may have lived in the San Fernando Valley, though that could not be confirmed.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether he was beaten in a fight, attacked by a stranger, or struck by a vehicle, all of which can lead to a finding of blunt force trauma. It does not say what time of day he was hurt, whether he died at the scene or later at a hospital, whether anyone saw what happened, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect. The location, a corner on Sherman Way, suggests that he was hurt outdoors on a major street.

Winnetka is a neighborhood in the west San Fernando Valley, part of the city of Los Angeles. It is made up largely of single-family homes and apartment complexes on a flat grid of streets, with commercial strips along its main roads. Sherman Way is one of the Valley's longest east-west boulevards, running across the Valley floor past shopping centers, gas stations, restaurants and apartments, and it carries heavy traffic at most hours.

A corner on a boulevard like Sherman Way is rarely empty. Drivers stopped at the light, people at nearby businesses, and residents of apartments along the street may have seen an argument, a fight, or a man lying on the ground. Security cameras at businesses near the intersection may also have recorded the area that night. By the mid-2010s Los Angeles was recording roughly 250 to 300 homicides a year, among the lowest totals in decades, yet many of those killings still went unsolved.

Geoffrey Koness was a young man, and he surely had parents, relatives or friends who still remember him. None of them appear to have spoken publicly about him or about what happened to him.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Geoffrey Koness could be found in news archives or public records. More than eight years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who was near Corbin Street and Sherman Way in Winnetka in late May 2017, or who knew Geoffrey and was with him in the hours before his death, may hold information that could help detectives. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can call the Los Angeles Police Department at 877-527-3247 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
