Martin Eduardo Lopez was 39 years old when he died on Thursday, March 29, 2018, in Boyle Heights, on the east side of Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma on the northbound 101 Freeway near 4th Street. His death was ruled a homicide, and it is listed as a California Highway Patrol case, handled by the CHP's Central Los Angeles office.

The coroner's records describe him as a Latino man in his late 30s.

Beyond his name, his age and the place where he died, almost nothing about Martin Eduardo Lopez has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on the death. He surely had family, friends or neighbors who remember who he was, but none of that has entered the public record. Martin Lopez is one of the most common name combinations in Southern California, and searches return dozens of other men, none of whom is him.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say whether he was beaten in a fight, attacked by a stranger, assaulted indoors or on the street, or struck by a vehicle, all of which can lead to a finding of blunt force trauma. It does not say what time of day he was hurt, whether he died at the scene or later at a hospital, whether anyone saw what happened, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect.

The location and the agency do offer some clues. The California Highway Patrol is responsible for the freeways, and a death on a freeway that the CHP investigates as a homicide may involve a vehicle, such as a hit-and-run driver who struck a person and fled, or a fight that began on the road. That is an inference from the location, not a fact in the record, and the public record does not say whether he was a driver, a passenger or a pedestrian, or how he came to be on the freeway.

Boyle Heights lies just east of downtown Los Angeles, across the Los Angeles River. It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, with a long history as a home for working families and immigrants, and it is known for Mariachi Plaza. Several of the region's busiest freeways meet and cross in and around Boyle Heights.

Freeway deaths can be especially difficult to solve. Traffic moves fast and drivers who see something rarely stop. Hundreds of people are killed in Los Angeles County every year, and a large share of those killings end without an arrest.

Someone who drove the northbound 101 through Boyle Heights that day, or who knew Martin and where he was going, may remember something important.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Martin Eduardo Lopez could be found in news archives or public records. More than seven years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who was on or near the northbound 101 Freeway near 4th Street in Boyle Heights in late March 2018, or who knew him, may hold information that could help. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can contact the California Highway Patrol, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
