Bruce Larrie Johnson was 71 years old when he died on Tuesday, February 12, 2019. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died from blunt force trauma, and his death was ruled a homicide. The Los Angeles Times Homicide Report lists him as a white man, but it gives no address or neighborhood for where he was hurt and does not name the agency that investigated.

Beyond his name, his age and the date of his death, almost nothing about Bruce has been made public. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser that clearly refers to him could be found for this story, and no news outlet appears to have reported on his death. His first and last names are common, and the obituaries and court cases found under them belong to other men. His unusual middle name, Larrie, may be the detail that someone who knew him recognizes.

Because so little has been released, even the basic circumstances remain unknown to the public. The record does not say where he was when he was hurt, whether he was attacked in his home or on the street, whether he was beaten during a robbery or a fight, or whether he was struck by a vehicle, all of which can lead to a finding of blunt force trauma. It does not say whether he died at the scene or later at a hospital, or whether investigators ever identified a suspect.

For a man in his 70s, a homicide ruling can follow many different events. Older people are sometimes assaulted during robberies, by strangers on the street, or by someone they know, including relatives, roommates or caregivers. A push or a blow that causes a fall can lead to fatal head injuries days or even weeks later, and in some cases the death is ruled a homicide only after an autopsy. Investigators in such cases often have to reconstruct what happened without the victim's account.

Los Angeles recorded about 260 homicides in 2019, among the lowest yearly totals in more than half a century, yet many of those killings still went unsolved. Cases like his, with no location made public and no news coverage, are among the least known of all Los Angeles County homicides. Even people who might know something may never have realized that his death was a homicide at all.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Bruce Larrie Johnson could be found in news archives or public records. More than seven years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible. Anyone who knew Bruce, saw him in the days before February 12, 2019, or knows how he was hurt may hold information that could help. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500 or the Los Angeles Police Department at 877-527-3247, or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
