Sylvester Braxton James was 39 years old when he died on Saturday, July 10, 2021, in Hollywood. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, he died after sustaining blunt force trauma near 5651 Hollywood Boulevard, at the eastern end of the boulevard. His death was ruled a homicide.

James was a Black man in the prime of his life, still years short of 40 at the time of his death. No obituary, memorial page or family fundraiser for him could be found for this story, and no news outlet reported his death. The LAPD has no victim page for him that could be found, and no press release about the case was located.

One detail in the record stands out. The Los Angeles Times Homicide Report lists the investigating unit as the LAPD's West Bureau traffic division, the unit that handles serious and fatal crashes, rather than a homicide squad. That suggests he was struck by a vehicle, and that the driver's actions led the Medical Examiner to rule his death a homicide, as often happens when a driver hits someone and flees or strikes a person on purpose. But no public account confirms how he was hurt, what kind of vehicle was involved, or whether the driver stopped.

The 5600 block of Hollywood Boulevard lies in East Hollywood, near Western Avenue, far from the tourist stretch of the Walk of Fame. It is a busy commercial corridor of small shops, apartment buildings, bus stops and a Metro Red Line station a few blocks away at Hollywood and Western, with heavy traffic and many people on foot at all hours. Hit-and-run crashes are a persistent problem on such streets. Los Angeles records thousands of hit-and-run collisions every year, many of them involving people on foot, and many of the drivers responsible are never found. Families of those victims often say the hardest part is not knowing who was behind the wheel.

The city of Los Angeles recorded 397 homicides in 2021, the most since 2006, according to the Los Angeles Times. Deaths caused by drivers who flee are counted separately by police, but when the Medical Examiner rules such a death a homicide, it appears in the county's homicide records, as his did. Cases like his can go unsolved when there is no clear video of the vehicle and no witness who saw the plate.

No arrest, criminal charge or court case connected to the death of Sylvester Braxton James could be found in news archives or public records. More than four years later, there is no public sign that anyone has been held responsible for his death on Hollywood Boulevard. Anyone who saw a crash or a confrontation near 5651 Hollywood Boulevard on July 10, 2021, or who knew him, may hold information that could help. Even a small detail, such as a name overheard, a vehicle seen nearby or a conversation remembered, can help detectives move a case forward. Anyone with information can call the Los Angeles Police Department at 877-527-3247 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
