On the morning of Thursday, December 18, 2003, emergency responders and law enforcement officers were called to an incident in the San Fernando Valley community of Encino. Outside a residential address in front of 4533 Collett Avenue, twenty-five-year-old Cloud Michael Pierson was found unresponsive. Pierson, a Latino male, died at the scene, cutting short a young life and leaving his family searching for answers that have remained elusive for decades.

The neighborhood where Pierson died is situated along Collett Avenue in Encino, a quiet suburban pocket lined with single-family residences, leafy street trees, and manicured yards, positioned not far from the Sepulveda Dam Basin and the Ventura Freeway corridor. Encino is typically regarded as one of the quieter, affluent areas of Los Angeles, rarely touched by the higher rates of violent crime seen in other sections of the city. The occurrence of a fatal encounter on a residential sidewalk in the neighborhood stood in stark contrast to the normally peaceful residential surroundings.

Following his death, an examination was conducted by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner. Officials determined the manner of death to be a homicide, formally establishing that Pierson died at the hands of another. However, authorities did not publicly release the specific medical cause of death, cataloging it only under other circumstances in official records. Detailed public accounts regarding the weapons involved, physical trauma, or initial eyewitness reports were never disseminated by investigators.

Pierson, who was born on April 18, 1978, was a father, son, and brother. He was survived by his parents, Tina Combs and Michael Pierson, his young daughter, Savannah Pierson, and his sister, Brianna Combs. Family and friends gathered to honor his life and lay him to rest on January 8, 2004, holding services at the Hall of Liberty Chapel at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills. In the months that followed his death, his estate pursued legal action that culminated in a civil wrongful death settlement with the City of Los Angeles.

The year 2003 was a difficult period across Los Angeles County, which recorded over a thousand homicides as police agencies throughout the region grappled with significant caseloads. In Pierson's case, no criminal suspects have ever been formally named or arrested, and prosecutors have not filed criminal charges in connection with his death. More than twenty years later, the full narrative of what unfolded outside the home on Collett Avenue remains buried in official case files, and the criminal investigation into Cloud Michael Pierson's death remains open and unsolved.
