In the early morning darkness of Sunday, October 24, 2010, gunfire erupted on a commercial and residential corridor in Carson, California. Around 2:10 a.m., twenty-two-year-old Byron Scott Miller was riding as a passenger in a vehicle traveling in the vicinity of Del Amo Boulevard and Leapwood Avenue, near the South Bay Pavilion shopping center. Without warning, an unknown assailant opened fire on the moving car.
Bullets pierced the automobile, striking Byron Miller. The sudden and violent ambush caused chaos inside the vehicle, and the car veered off its path and crashed directly into a tree alongside the roadway. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the intersection after witnesses and passersby reported the collision and gunfire.
First responders found the vehicle heavily damaged against the tree. Miller, who was Black, had suffered critical trauma from both the gunfire and the violent impact of the collision. Paramedics rushed him to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel worked frantically to stabilize him. Despite life-saving efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead approximately forty-five minutes later. The coroner's office later noted that Miller died from multiple traumatic injuries, specifically citing both gunshot wounds and severe blunt force trauma sustained in the subsequent crash.
The female driver of the vehicle survived the incident. She was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation and treatment of injuries sustained during the crash, and investigators later confirmed that she was released following medical care. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau took charge of the investigation. Detectives Dan McElderry and Kevin Acebedo processed the scene for ballistic evidence, examined the trajectory of the gunfire, and canvassed the surrounding streets near the mall for witnesses or potential surveillance footage.
In the days immediately following the shooting, detectives announced that they were actively following several leads to determine where the gunfire originated and whether the occupants of the car had been specifically targeted. However, no suspects were publicly identified, no description of any shooter or suspect vehicle was released, and investigators were left searching for a clear motive.
The South Bay community of Carson experienced several violent incidents during 2010, leaving neighborhood residents and authorities grappling with recurring street violence. Despite continued appeals by sheriff's detectives for the public to come forward with information, the case eventually went cold.
More than a decade after the fatal ambush near Del Amo Boulevard and Leapwood Avenue, Byron Scott Miller's death remains unsolved. No shooter has ever been charged or prosecuted for the attack. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau continues to ask anyone who was in the area of Del Amo Boulevard and Leapwood Avenue that morning, or anyone who holds knowledge about the gunfire that led to the fatal crash, to contact detectives or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
