On June 28, 2012, 66-year-old Curley Lee Sloss III died after experiencing a medical emergency during a high-stress confrontation in Culver City. Emergency responders transported him to a medical facility, but lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead. Following his passing, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner conducted an examination under case number 2012-04267 to determine how and why his death occurred.

The medical examiner established the immediate cause of death as sudden cardiac death precipitated by extreme physiological stress, with severe underlying coronary artery disease cited as a significant contributing factor. Because the severe physiological stress was triggered by external, hostile, or traumatic circumstances involving human agency, forensic pathologists officially ruled the manner of death a homicide. Despite the determination that his cardiac arrest was induced by an unlawful or threatening encounter, specific investigative details outlining the exact altercation or events leading up to the fatal incident were never released publicly.

Sloss was born on July 4, 1945. County vital and cremation records later documented his background as a Caucasian male approaching his sixty-seventh birthday when his life came to an unexpected end. Little was publicized by local news media regarding the incident at the time, leaving family members and acquaintances without clear public closure as investigators took up the case.

Homicides ruled through physiological stress represent an extraordinarily small and complex fraction of cases reviewed by Southern California law enforcement. Because there is often no obvious weapon such as a firearm or knife, establishing the precise chain of criminal responsibility requires extensive eyewitness accounts, video surveillance, and complex medical-legal assessments. The investigation was handled in Culver City, an incorporated city bordered heavily by West Los Angeles, where violent crime rates remained relatively low compared to neighboring metropolitan divisions that year.

Over the years, detectives sought to piece together the sequence of events that placed Sloss in such extreme distress. However, no suspect descriptions, vehicle details, or formal charges have ever been announced by local police agencies or the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. With no arrests on record, the circumstances of the encounter that triggered the fatal collapse of Curley Lee Sloss III remain unexplained, and the homicide investigation remains open and unsolved.
