On the late evening of Monday, July 24, 2017, thirty-year-old Mario Rupert Melbourne Jr., a Black man residing in neighboring Long Beach, was in Compton standing near the corner of East Cypress Street and South Crane Avenue. Friends and witnesses reported that Melbourne was working a security assignment in the area that evening, surrounded by an informal gathering of acquaintances, his brother, and his brother's girlfriend. The quiet summer night in the residential and commercial crossroads was abruptly interrupted shortly before 11:00 p.m. when a gray BMW sedan pulled up alongside the crowd.
A man emerged from the vehicle, sparking an immediate confrontation with Melbourne. According to detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and accounts shared by Melbourne's father, the motorist was an acquaintance known to Melbourne who had previously been accused of stealing money from him. Given that contentious history, Melbourne ordered the man to leave the gathering immediately. The heated verbal dispute quickly escalated into physical violence in the street, erupting into a fistfight between the two men.
Following the physical fight, the confrontation appeared to subside temporarily when the driver stepped back into his sedan and began driving away from the intersection. However, instead of departing, the motorist suddenly executed a sharp U-turn and accelerated directly toward Melbourne, who was still standing in the roadway. Investigators concluded that the driver deliberately used the car as a weapon, running Melbourne down in a fatal vehicular strike before speeding away eastbound along Cypress Street. Melbourne suffered severe traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders at 11:05 p.m.
The suspect abandoned the vehicle shortly after fleeing the impact, and sheriff's deputies recovered the gray BMW abandoned only a short distance away from the crash site. Melbourne's brother and others standing nearby narrowly escaped harm during the sudden vehicular assault. The loss devastated Melbourne's family, who grieved the loss of a devoted relative and the father of a young seven-year-old son left behind without his parent.
Investigators from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau publicly identified the driver as forty-four-year-old Frankie Mazen III. Detectives issued bulletins naming Mazen as a suspect wanted for questioning in connection with the homicide, but he vanished into the community and avoided immediate apprehension. In the years since the 2017 killing, law enforcement agencies have never announced an arrest, formal criminal filing, or conviction in the case, leaving the vehicular murder unresolved.
Compton and the surrounding communities of Los Angeles County experienced dozens of homicides that year, straining investigative resources and leaving many families awaiting answers. The Sheriff's Homicide Bureau continues to ask anyone who witnessed the fatal confrontation at East Cypress Street and South Crane Avenue or who has knowledge regarding the whereabouts of Frankie Mazen III to contact detectives at 890-5500 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
