In the early evening of Saturday, August 29, 2026, the life of 15-year-old Kyren T. Wormely was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. Kyren, a Black male, was outside in his South Austin neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois, specifically in the 5200 block of West Augusta Boulevard. At approximately 8:33 p.m., a dark-colored SUV was seen passing by the area where Kyren was standing. Suddenly, an occupant of the vehicle opened fire, striking the teenager twice in the chest.
The gunshots shattered the evening calm and left Kyren critically wounded. Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene, and Chicago Fire Department paramedics provided immediate medical attention. He was then rushed to Stroger Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, Kyren T. Wormely succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 9:09 p.m. that same night. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office later officially ruled his death a homicide, with the cause being multiple gunshot wounds.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Chicago Police Department's Area Four detectives launched a homicide investigation. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with Kyren's murder, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The investigation remains active, with law enforcement working to identify the individuals in the dark-colored SUV and to understand the motive behind the shooting. The case stands as a painful and unsolved act of gun violence, leaving a family and a community to mourn the loss of a young life and to await the justice that has so far remained elusive.
