Joel McCray “Joe Boy” Lynch, a 50-year-old man from Hollister, North Carolina, was fatally shot on the night of August 30, 2026, outside a convenience store along Highway 561 in Halifax County. Lynch had been born on August 22, 1976, in Halifax County to Prince Lynch and Virginia Richardson Lynch and had celebrated his birthday just eight days before his death.
At approximately 9:30 p.m., deputies with the Halifax County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a convenience store in the
37,000 block of Highway 561 after receiving reports of gunfire. When deputies reached the scene, they discovered Lynch suffering from gunshot wounds. First responders immediately attempted lifesaving measures, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting occurred while a large gathering of ATV riders was at or around the convenience store. That gathering became a significant part of the initial investigation because numerous people were potentially in a position to have seen or heard what happened. Detectives began interviewing witnesses and trying to reconstruct the events that preceded the gunfire, including determining whether Lynch had been specifically targeted and what may have led to the shooting.
In the immediate aftermath, the Halifax County Sheriff's Office did not publicly identify a suspected shooter or announce a motive. Authorities appealed to people who had been at the store, particularly members of the ATV gathering and anyone else who witnessed the shooting, to provide information. Detective Sergeant M. Hasty was identified as one of the investigators handling information related to the case, while tips were also being accepted by the sheriff's office and Halifax County Crime Stoppers.

Away from the circumstances of his death, Lynch had deep roots in Halifax County. He attended schools in the Halifax County Public School System and worked for many years as a groundskeeper for Gene Minton. He was married to Nikee Lynch and was the father of Shakeera, Ja'Quez, Desmonec and Clifford. Another daughter, Lashandra Richardson, had died before him. He also left behind twelve grandchildren, as well as his parents, a sister and an extended family.
Those who remembered Lynch described a life centered heavily around family. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, dancing, entertaining relatives and friends, telling jokes and washing cars, and he was especially known for enjoying time with his grandchildren. His funeral service was held September 11, 2026, at St. Gideon Baptist Church in Hollister, followed by burial in the Lynch Family Cemetery. His death left his family mourning while investigators continued seeking the person responsible for the gunfire that ended his life.
