On a tragic Friday evening in St. Louis, the promising life of 18-year-old Justin Holmes was cut short in a senseless act of violence. A recent graduate of Confluence Academy High School, Justin had his future planned out. He had recently enrolled at Ranken Technical College with dreams of becoming a carpenter and was just a month away from celebrating his 19th birthday. Described by his family as a joyful young man who loved to make people laugh, he was a hard worker, holding jobs at several fast-food restaurants to support his ambitions. On September 4, 2026, after leaving a party with two friends, Justin was giving an acquaintance a ride home when the unthinkable happened.
In the West End neighborhood, on the 5900 block of Plymouth Avenue, the car Justin was in was approached by three individuals with the intent to rob him of his bag. A struggle ensued over the bag, and one of the assailants, later identified as 19-year-old Darius Nelson, allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Justin. The three suspects then fled with the bag. Justin Holmes was rushed to a hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries. The community was left in shock, and his family was devastated by the loss of a young man with a bright future, senselessly killed for a bag.
In the wake of the shooting, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department launched a homicide investigation. Their efforts quickly led to the arrest of Darius Nelson, who was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and robbery. While one suspect was in custody, the two other individuals involved in the robbery and murder of Justin Holmes remained at large. Justin's grieving family, including his mother, Ashley McCalister, and grandmother, Rosetta Harvey, held a prayer vigil and balloon release at Penrose Park, pleading for the remaining suspects to turn themselves in and for justice to be served for their beloved Justin. As of late September 2026, the case against Darius Nelson is pending, and the search for the other two suspects continues as a community mourns the loss of a life taken too soon.
