Agustin Mata Rodriguez, an 18-year-old man from Richgrove, was fatally shot late on September 5, 2026, in McFarland, California. McFarland police responded at approximately 11:10 p.m. and found him suffering from a gunshot wound in the roadway in the 300 block of 8th Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators later determined that the shooting itself occurred nearby, in the alley running between the 300 blocks of 7th and 8th streets.
A large party was taking place in the 300 block of 7th Street when the gunfire erupted, with police estimating that more than 50 people were present. Detectives believed that numerous people at or near the gathering may have witnessed what happened, recorded video, seen activity surrounding the shooting, or possessed information that could help identify whoever was responsible. Despite the number of people nearby, investigators said witnesses with potentially valuable information had not all come forward.
The killing occurred during an unusually violent period for McFarland. Another fatal shooting had taken place roughly two weeks earlier at a laundromat on West Perkins Avenue. Police Chief Adrian Olmos said investigators were examining multiple leads but had not determined whether the two killings were connected or whether gang activity played a role in either incident. Because of the two homicides occurring so close together, police increased patrols and visibility in the community while also watching for the possibility of retaliatory violence.
As the investigation continued, the City of McFarland offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person or people responsible for Rodriguez's killing. Police specifically appealed to people who attended the party, as well as anyone possessing photographs, video, messages, social-media communications, or other information connected with the shooting. The investigation was identified as case number 26-00925.
No publicly identified suspect or arrest in Rodriguez's killing had been announced in the available reporting reviewed through September 24, 2026. Although suspects were identified in the separate laundromat homicide, police had not established that those individuals were connected to Rodriguez's death, and authorities continued treating the September 5 shooting as its own investigation.
