In the early evening of September 15, 2026, the life of 19-year-old Nyandeng Chol, a Black/African American female from Lincoln, Nebraska, was tragically cut short. The sequence of events began around 7:20 p.m. when Lincoln Police responded to a call about a disturbance involving juveniles near North 47th Street and Cleveland Avenue. As officers arrived and began to engage with those involved, some individuals, including Chol, fled the immediate area.
This initial incident, however, would soon escalate into a fatal encounter just a short distance away.
About 15 minutes after the first police contact, while officers were still investigating the disturbance, the sound of a single gunshot pierced the air about a block away, near the intersection of North 46th Street and Madison Avenue. In the intervening time, Chol and several other people had become embroiled in a new confrontation. This second altercation started as a verbal dispute with the wife of 37-year-old Tyler Benzel, which then reportedly turned physical. In response to this, Benzel emerged from his home, approached the group, and after telling them to leave and making verbal threats, he raised a handgun and fired one shot. Officers arrived at the scene within moments to find Chol suffering from a single gunshot wound. They immediately administered life-saving measures before she was rushed to a local hospital, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into Nyandeng Chol's death led to the swift arrest of Tyler Benzel. Investigators recovered a 9-millimeter handgun at the scene, as well as other firearms from Benzel's residence. Benzel was subsequently booked into the Lancaster County Jail and charged with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm to commit a felony. His wife was not charged in connection with the incident. On Friday, September 18, 2026, Benzel appeared for his arraignment at the Lancaster County courthouse where he was ordered to be held without bond. The case against him hinges on the moments that transformed a neighborhood disturbance into a homicide, where a confrontation between strangers culminated in a single, fatal shot allegedly fired by Benzel, ending the life of a young woman known to her friends and family as "Brianna".
