In the summer of 1980, a wave of terror swept through Los Angeles, leaving a trail of gruesome discoveries and shattered lives. One of the victims of this dark period was a 20-year-old woman named Exxie LaFaye Wilson. On June 23, 1980, a horrifying discovery was made in a Studio City alley. Inside a small pine box, wrapped in a t-shirt, was the severed head of a young woman. The rest of her decapitated body was found in a restaurant parking lot.
The coroner would later determine that Exxie had died from a gunshot wound to the back of her head, and the decapitation, a brutal act that required numerous cuts, occurred after her death. This shocking crime was not an isolated incident but part of a string of slayings that would become known as the "Sunset Strip Murders."
The investigation into Exxie's murder and the other related killings eventually led police to a deeply disturbed couple, Douglas Daniel Clark and Carol Mary Bundy. Clark, a former Air Force officer, and Bundy, a vocational nurse, were the perpetrators of these sadistic crimes, targeting young women, often runaways and sex workers, who frequented the Sunset Strip. Their spree of violence was marked by extreme brutality. After luring Exxie into his car, Clark shot her before committing the heinous act of decapitation. In a chilling detail that emerged later, it was revealed that Clark had taken Exxie's head back to the apartment he shared with Bundy, storing it in their freezer. Bundy would at times apply makeup to the severed head at Clark's behest.
The breakthrough in the case came not from the initial investigation, but from within the murderous duo's twisted relationship. On August 11, 1980, Carol Bundy confessed to the murder of her former lover, Jack Murray, whom she killed out of fear that he would expose her and Clark's crimes. During her confession, Bundy implicated Clark in the series of murders that had plagued the city, including the killing of Exxie Wilson. This confession led to the arrest of both Clark and Bundy. Clark, in a desperate attempt to shift the blame, accused Bundy and Murray of committing the murders and claimed Bundy killed Murray to frame him. However, the evidence against Clark was substantial. He was ultimately convicted of six counts of first-degree murder, including the murder of Exxie Wilson, and was sentenced to death. Carol Bundy, for her role in the horrific crimes, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case of Exxie Wilson and the other victims of the Sunset Strip Killers remains a chilling chapter in the history of Los Angeles crime, an overview of a descent into depravity that ended the lives of several young women and exposed a shocking capacity for cruelty.
