In the late summer of 2026, the small community of Sardis, Georgia, was shattered by a tragic and violent series of events that claimed the life of 31-year-old Jessica Rose Carroll and three others. Jessica, a resident of Sardis, was remembered by those who knew her as a sweet person with a great sense of humor who enjoyed arts and crafts. Her life was cut short on Sunday, August 9, 2026, when she became a victim in a devastating quadruple homicide that also took the life of her mother, Betty Fort.
The horrific events unfolded across two separate locations in Burke County. Investigators determined that 44-year-old Adolphus Christopher Morris was the perpetrator of the killings. The violence reportedly began after a physical altercation between Morris and Jessica's mother, Betty, which was broken up by two of the other victims, Walter "Meat" Bunch and Rebecca Bolton-Oglesby. Following this dispute, Morris retrieved a semi-automatic handgun from a pawn shop. On that fateful Friday, Morris went to a residence on Tom Bargeron Road and fatally shot both Betty Holton and her daughter, Jessica Carroll. He then stole Holton's vehicle and drove to a home on Twin Lakes Drive, where he murdered Bunch and Oglesby. A fifth individual, Andrew Putnam, was also shot by Morris but survived his injuries.
The manhunt for Adolphus Christopher Morris concluded in a dramatic and fatal confrontation with law enforcement. After being identified as the shooter by the surviving victim, police tracked Morris down. A police chase ensued, which ended after deputies used stop sticks to disable his vehicle. Morris then crashed his car and opened fire on the deputies. The officers returned fire, and Morris was struck and pronounced dead at the scene. With the sole suspect deceased, there were no subsequent arrests or trials in connection with the murders of Jessica Carroll, her mother, and the other two victims. The case concluded with the death of the man responsible, leaving the community of Sardis to mourn the four lives senselessly taken. The local police chief organized a community prayer vigil to honor the victims and help the grieving community heal from the tragedy that had so deeply affected them.
