On the morning of Friday, July 31, 2026, a sense of unease shadowed 25-year-old Kimarii McLemore as she prepared for what should have been a day of accomplishment. A student in the carpentry program at the Oakland Adult & Career Education Center, located at the Parker Community Resource Center, she was on the verge of completing her course. However, a lingering dispute with a male classmate had left her feeling unsafe, a fear she had expressed to her mother. Despite a conversation that had seemingly resolved the issue, a sense of apprehension remained. That morning, her concern escalated when she noticed a suspicious car in the campus parking lot and sent a text to her mother about it.

Tragically, Kimarii's fears materialized shortly before 9 a.m. when gunfire erupted within the school grounds on the 7900 block of MacArthur Boulevard. Responding to a ShotSpotter alert, Oakland police officers arrived to find Kimarii with at least one gunshot wound. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. In the chaotic aftermath, it was confirmed that a second individual had also been shot and was hospitalized with injuries. The campus was immediately placed on lockdown to secure the safety of other students and staff. Her mother, having driven to the school after the unsettling text message, tragically heard the gunshots and ran to find her daughter.

The Oakland Police Department's Homicide Division promptly took over the investigation, with the police chief describing the shooting as a "very intentional crime" and a targeted attack, not a random act of violence. Investigators have been looking into the dispute with the classmate as a possible motive but have not publicly confirmed this connection. Family members, devastated by the loss of a young woman they said was striving to better her life, have been cooperating with the police. As of early August 2026, the investigation into the death of Kimarii McLemore remains active and ongoing. Authorities have not yet publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the shooting. The case, which cut short the life of a young woman on the brink of a new chapter, is still without a resolution, leaving a family and community awaiting justice.
