On October 16, 1974, Dawn Marie Wine, a 16-year-old girl, was at the Marlborough, Connecticut, home she shared with her mother, Karen Wine. Dawn was reportedly doing schoolwork when a stranger appeared at the door and calmly asked whether her parents were home. She explained that her mother was away and that her father no longer lived there. The seemingly ordinary encounter suddenly turned violent when the man forced his way inside and produced a sawed-off shotgun.
