In the summer of 1996, a young woman named Kelli Garrett found her life irrevocably altered by a chance encounter that spiraled into a nightmare. Following a dispute with her husband on July 24th, Garrett sought solace at the Blu-Water Saloon in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, where she met up with a friend, Jesse Ray. Unbeknownst to Garrett, her friend's father was David Parker Ray, a man who would later become infamous as the "Toy-Box Killer." During their time at the saloon, Garrett's beer was reportedly drugged. Later, as she made her way into the parking lot, she was struck from behind and lost consciousness. She awoke to a horrifying reality inside David Parker Ray's trailer, which he had soundproofed and equipped for torture, a place he chillingly referred to as his "Toy Box."
For two harrowing days, Garrett was subjected to unimaginable torture and sexual abuse. She was restrained with a dog collar and leash and injected with drugs to keep her subdued and to blur her memory of the events. At one point, believing her to be dead after slashing her throat, Ray dumped her on the side of a road near Caballo. Miraculously, Garrett survived the ordeal and managed to get to a local clinic for her injuries before making her way back home. However, her nightmare was far from over. When she recounted her story to her husband and the police, she was met with disbelief. Her husband, convinced she had been unfaithful, divorced her. Feeling utterly failed by the very people who should have protected her, Garrett relocated to Colorado, carrying the trauma of her experience in silence.
Years later, the truth of Kelli Garrett's ordeal came to light with the escape of another of David Parker Ray's victims, Cynthia Vigil, in March 1999. Vigil's harrowing account led investigators to Ray's trailer, where they discovered a videotape documenting Garrett's torture. A distinctive tattoo on her ankle allowed authorities to identify and locate her in Colorado. Garrett returned to New Mexico to testify against her attacker, but the path to justice was fraught with challenges. The first trial against Ray for the crimes committed against her resulted in a mistrial after two jurors found her story unbelievable. Despite the setback, a retrial was held, and this time, David Parker Ray was convicted on all 12 counts related to his abduction and torture of Kelli Garrett. As part of a larger plea deal involving other victims, Ray was ultimately sentenced in 2001 to 224 years in prison.
