On the evening of June 18, 2026, a violent encounter in a Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, home tragically ended the life of 26-year-old Layzon Breland. The events of that Thursday began with a physical altercation in the front yard of Breland's residence on Chelsea Circle in Coolbaugh Township. The dispute escalated dramatically when the other man involved in the fight forced his way into Breland's home, armed with a handgun.
Breland retreated upstairs to his bedroom, but his assailant pursued him.
Inside the bedroom, a gunfight erupted. Breland, in an attempt to defend himself, armed himself with his own handgun and returned fire. In the exchange, both men were struck. However, Breland sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including a fatal one to the head, and was pronounced dead at the scene when Pocono Mountain Regional Police officers arrived shortly before 8 p.m. The suspect, wounded in the confrontation, fled the residence, leaving a trail of blood from the bedroom to the street.
The investigation into Breland's death moved swiftly. Witnesses reported seeing a man flee the scene in a white vehicle. This information, combined with the blood trail, provided crucial early leads for law enforcement. Approximately 27 minutes after the initial 911 call, a man with a gunshot wound was dropped off at a hospital in Scranton. Surveillance footage from the hospital captured the white vehicle, and license plate readers tracked it heading toward Scranton. The vehicle was traced to the girlfriend of 27-year-old Yasim McDonald of Scranton. Inside the car, investigators discovered blood and cleaning supplies. The pivotal piece of evidence came from rapid DNA testing, which matched McDonald's DNA to the blood found at the crime scene. McDonald was subsequently arrested and charged with criminal homicide and tampering with physical evidence. He was arraigned and denied bail, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for the end of June 2026. The case against McDonald is proceeding through the legal system, and as of now, the charges represent allegations for which a conviction has not yet been secured.
