In the late morning of Tuesday, June 23, 2026, the life of 24-year-old Jayveon Montrell Hall, a Black man from Lake City, Florida, was tragically cut short. Responding to reports of a shooting just before 11 a.m., officers from the Lake City Police Department arrived at the scene in the area of NW Albright Place to a grim discovery. There, they found Hall suffering from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. Despite any efforts to assist, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial moments of the investigation saw a significant law enforcement presence descend upon the area as detectives began the meticulous process of gathering evidence and speaking with potential witnesses.
The investigation into Hall's death quickly pointed towards a suspect. Detectives identified 25-year-old Willie Kyedell Thomas as the individual allegedly responsible for the fatal shooting. Law enforcement, including the Columbia County Sheriff's Office and a K-9 unit from the Florida Department of Corrections, tracked Thomas to his location. Upon being confronted by officers, Thomas refused to comply with their commands. In order to apprehend him, a law enforcement K-9 was deployed, leading to his capture. Following his arrest, Thomas was transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation.
After his release from the hospital, authorities planned to have detectives interview Willie Kyedell Thomas and then book him into the Columbia County Detention Facility. The Lake City Police Department announced that appropriate criminal charges were forthcoming as they continued to process evidence and coordinate with the Office of the State Attorney for the Third Judicial Circuit. Chief of Police Gerald Butler extended his condolences to Jayveon Hall's family and friends, emphasizing that no family should have to endure such a loss due to violence. The case at that point remained an active investigation, with law enforcement piecing together the events that led to the untimely death of Jayveon Montrell Hall.
