In the early moments of a Sunday morning, just after midnight on June 28, 2026, a violent confrontation shattered the quiet of a residential property in the North Shore area of Mecca, California. It was there that Alberto Padron, a 44-year-old man, was fatally wounded in a burst of gunfire that also left his 43-year-old friend, identified only as "G.L.," injured.
When Riverside County Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon on Surfside Avenue, they discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics who arrived at the scene pronounced Padron dead, while his friend was transported to a local trauma center to be treated for his injuries, from which he is still recovering.
The investigation into the shooting was swiftly undertaken by the Riverside Sheriff's Central Homicide Unit, who soon identified a suspect in the killing. Their efforts pointed towards Adolfo Suarez Lopez, a 50-year-old resident of Indio, as the man who allegedly opened fire on Padron and his friend. According to sheriff's officials and court documents, Lopez was involved in an unspecified dispute with the two victims when he allegedly pulled out a 9mm semiautomatic handgun and fired, killing Padron and wounding his companion before fleeing the scene. The search for Lopez extended beyond the local area, and just a few days later, on July 2, 2026, he was apprehended in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, by Mexican authorities. He was then turned over to the Riverside County Gang Impact Team at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
Following his arrest, Adolfo Suarez Lopez, a convicted felon, was charged with first-degree murder for the death of Alberto Padron. The charges against him also include attempted murder for the shooting of the second victim, being a felon in possession of a loaded firearm, and sentence-enhancing allegations of using a gun and causing great bodily injury. Lopez was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center and later transferred to the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning, where he is being held without bail. He made his initial court appearance, where a public defender was appointed to represent him, and his formal arraignment was scheduled for July 22 at the Larson Justice Center in Indio.
