Georgia Darlene Barker, a 71-year-old woman, was killed inside her home on Shane Lane in Cottonwood, California, on July 3, 2026. At approximately 5:46 p.m., the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office received a report that Barker had been shot by her brother, George Charles Barker. Authorities were also told that George had set fire to a neighboring residence and fled the area.
Deputies entered Georgia’s home in the 3300 block of Shane Lane and found her dead inside.
Evidence at the scene showed that she had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, leading investigators to classify her death as a homicide. The Shasta County Coroner’s Office positively identified her and notified her family. Detectives and evidence technicians from the sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit obtained a search warrant, processed the residence and collected evidence connected to the shooting.
At the same time, firefighters responded to the neighboring property, where an inhabited structure was burning. Cal Fire crews extinguished the blaze before investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding it. Authorities alleged that George Barker started the fire after shooting his sister, although officials had not publicly disclosed a motive for either act.
George Barker, 68, reportedly left the area after the killing. He was located a short time later on Cypress Drive in Cottonwood, within Tehama County, after allegedly becoming involved in a separate hit-and-run collision. Officers detained him, and he was transported to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit for questioning.
Investigators said the evidence established probable cause to believe George was responsible for Georgia’s death and the fire at the neighboring home. Authorities also learned that he was on active felony probation in Shasta County for criminal threats and resisting or obstructing an executive officer through force, violence or threats.
George was initially booked into the Shasta County Jail on suspicion of murder, causing a fire to an inhabited structure, being a felon in possession of a firearm, driving with a suspended license, driving under the influence, driving with a blood-alcohol concentration of at least 0.08 percent and violating probation. His initial combined bail was reported as $1,025,000.
Prosecutors later filed charges that included murder, first-degree residential burglary, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, arson of another person’s property, recklessly causing a fire to an inhabited structure, possession of a firearm by a felon, driving under the influence and driving with a suspended or revoked license. Several sentencing enhancements were also attached to the case.
George appeared in Shasta County Superior Court on July 8 and pleaded not guilty. A judge set bail in the murder case at $1 million, but he was also ordered held without bail because of the alleged probation violation. His next court appearance was scheduled for July 15 for a setting hearing and confirmation of legal representation. No trial or conviction had occurred, and the allegations against him remained pending in court.
