A hardworking 17-year-old male, Kevin Zamora, was fatally shot on the evening of Tuesday, June 2, 2026, while at his job inside the Desert Sky Mall in west Phoenix. Zamora, who his family remembers as a loving and devoted son and brother, had recently graduated from high school and was working to help support his family. He sold cologne at a kiosk in the mall and had recently used his earnings to purchase his first car.
On the night of the incident, shortly before 8:30 p.m., a verbal altercation broke out between a suspect and a group of people that included Zamora and a 16-year-old co-worker. The dispute escalated, leading to gunfire inside the mall, which sent shoppers scrambling for safety as stores went into lockdown.
Phoenix Police officers responded to reports of an active shooter and, upon securing the scene, found two teenage victims. Kevin Zamora was discovered with critical gunshot wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
