A quiet Wednesday in Mendenhall, Mississippi, turned tragic on June 3, 2026, ending in the deaths of a beloved elderly couple, 71-year-old Virginia Carol Barnett-Blair and her 74-year-old husband, Billy Blair. The events began to unfold when concerned family members were unable to reach the couple, prompting a welfare check at their home on W.L. Blair Road.
When Simpson County sheriff's deputies arrived, they discovered signs of a possible burglary and were met with gunfire from inside the residence. One deputy was struck in the foot, initiating a tense, nearly six-hour standoff with the shooter who had barricaded himself inside the Blair's home.
The suspect, later identified as 17-year-old Cordarius Laray Hobbs, remained defiant throughout the afternoon, even shooting down law enforcement drones. As multiple law enforcement agencies converged on the scene, negotiations were attempted. At one point, Hobbs indicated he would surrender but then fled out the back of the house, firing at officers as he escaped. A Mississippi Highway Patrol trooper returned fire, striking and injuring Hobbs, which finally led to his apprehension in a wooded area behind the home. It was only after special response teams secured the residence that the bodies of Virginia and Billy Blair were discovered inside. Both had been fatally shot.
In the days following the tragic events, Cordarius Laray Hobbs was charged as an adult with a litany of felonies, including two counts of capital murder, armed robbery, burglary, and multiple counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement and individuals over the age of 65. He was denied bond and is being held in the Rankin County Jail. The community of Mendenhall was left in shock and mourning for the well-respected couple, who were remembered for their kindness and decades of service to the area through their local tire business. The case against Hobbs is now proceeding through the Mississippi legal system, with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation leading the ongoing investigation.
