Mary Bramel, a woman from Sulphur Springs, Arkansas, was fatally shot inside her home in what authorities described as a domestic shooting involving her husband, 70-year-old Mark Lee Bramel. The violence unfolded on June 4, 2026, after Benton County deputies were called to the couple's residence by their son, who reported that his father had shot Mary and then turned the gun on himself.
According to court documents described in news reports, the son told authorities that Mark Bramel had
been talking about remedies for severe abdominal pain when he made a remark about having one “right here” and then shot Mary in the head. The son reportedly struggled with Mark over the gun before running outside to call 911. While he was outside, he heard two more gunshots from inside the home. When deputies arrived, they found both Mary and Mark alive, each suffering from gunshot wounds.
Investigators said Mark Bramel later admitted to shooting Mary. He reportedly told police he was in pain from cancer and said he did not want to leave his wife behind. Court documents quoted him as saying his cancer had spread and that he could no longer stand the pain. Mary later died from her injuries, with officials confirming her death in the days after the shooting.
Mark Lee Bramel was arrested on June 4 and booked into the Benton County Jail. Early reports listed charges of attempted capital murder and aggravated assault, and after Mary's death, prosecutors said he faced capital murder and aggravated assault charges. His bond was set at $1 million, and a public defender was appointed. A court date had been scheduled for July 13.
The case did not move toward trial. Mark Bramel died Tuesday night, June 9, 2026, at Mercy Hospital, according to the Benton County prosecutor. At the time his death was reported, the prosecutor said his cause of death was not known. Because the accused suspect died while facing charges, there were no reported trial proceedings or conviction in Mary Bramel's death.
