On a Saturday in early June, 39-year-old Sean Bree went to his job at a strip center on Belknap Road in the Houston, Texas area, not knowing it would be his last day. An argument with a coworker escalated into a fatal act of violence that ended Bree's life on June 6, 2026. According to his mother, Shamarilyn York, the coworker left after the initial dispute, only to return with a weapon. Bree's final words were, "Go on, nobody has time for that," before he was shot.
He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The shooting left his family, including his younger brother, devastated, and reopened old wounds for his mother, who had lost her eldest son to gun violence in Houston 22 years prior.
Houston Police Department homicide investigators quickly identified two individuals, 23-year-old Iddris Umaru and 22-year-old Axzey Mojica, as persons of interest in the shooting. Further investigation led to them being named as the primary suspects, and on June 9, both were charged with murder in Fort Bend County. Authorities then sought the public's help in locating the two fugitives. The search involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service's Gulf Coast Violent Offender Task Force and HPD's Westside Patrol Division Crime Suppression Team.
The manhunt for the two suspects came to a dramatic and tragic conclusion the following Saturday. Acting on a tip, officers located both Umaru and Mojica at a business on West Road. As law enforcement moved in to make the arrests, Axzey Mojica was taken into custody without incident. However, Iddris Umaru, faced with imminent capture, fatally shot himself with a handgun. Mojica now faces a murder charge in connection with Sean Bree's death, closing one chapter of a senseless tragedy while another begins in the justice system. The case highlights a workplace dispute that spiraled into a violent confrontation, resulting in the death of Sean Bree and the suicide of one of the men accused of his murder, leaving a family to mourn and a community to grapple with the aftermath of sudden violence.
