Librian Jones Jr., 24, was shot and killed on the evening of Saturday, June 6, 2026, in Sawyerville, Alabama, while attending a “Class Day Out” gathering near the Sawyerville Convenience Store on Alabama Highway 14. Early reports placed the shooting behind the store during the community event, and authorities initially said no suspect was in custody.
The gathering was in a rural area northwest of Greensboro, and the location was described as a place often used by residents from the surrounding area to come together.
What began as a community event turned deadly when gunfire broke out around 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. Authorities said Jones, who was identified in later reports as being from Greensboro and also referred to as “BJ,” was struck and killed. Sheriff Michael Hamilton said no one else at the event was hit by gunfire, and investigators later clarified that although attendees were gathered for the Class Day Out event near the store, the shooting itself did not happen inside the event venue.
The investigation quickly moved from an open fatal shooting inquiry to a murder case. Hale County Sheriff’s officials identified 23-year-old Kardarrell Darnell Winn of Sawyerville as the accused gunman. Winn was arrested the following Tuesday afternoon in Reform at his girlfriend’s house, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Task Force, the Reform Police Department, and the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities charged him with murder in Jones’s death.
A second arrest followed soon after. Hale County officials said 27-year-old Markayla Tysha Robins, identified as Winn’s girlfriend, was arrested Tuesday evening and charged with hindering prosecution. She was booked into the Hale County Jail on a $15,000 bond. Investigators did not publicly release specific details about what Robins was accused of doing to hinder the case, but authorities described Winn as the murder suspect and said the investigation was continuing.
The case also drew attention because of Winn’s prior contacts with law enforcement. Court records cited by The Greensboro Watchman reported that Winn had previously faced charges in several Alabama counties, including second-degree marijuana possession in Tuscaloosa County in 2022, second-degree assault in Tuscaloosa County in 2024, and third-degree burglary in Pickens County in 2024, where later bond forfeiture entries indicated he failed to appear. The same reporting stated that Winn had also been charged in Hale County with hindering prosecution in connection with a 2021 Sawyerville double homicide involving Devyn Sterling and Shalondria Grey-Chavers, though that was a separate case.
After Jones’s killing, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation took the lead on the case. Authorities asked anyone with information to contact Capt. Nelson at the Hale County Sheriff’s Office. As of the available reports, Winn was the named murder suspect, Robins was the second person arrested on a hindering prosecution charge, and no trial or conviction had yet been reported publicly in connection with Jones’s death.
