On April 26, 2017, 29-year-old Michael Anthony Barnwell was found dead in his home in west Charlotte, North Carolina. Police initially responded to a call regarding a "suspicious death" at the 4200 block of Welling Avenue, where Barnwell was discovered with a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite efforts from emergency services, Barnwell was pronounced dead at the scene. His death was later classified as a homicide by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
