On January 14, 2016, 67-year-old Carl Grier, a retired handyman, was found dead inside his home on Columbus Circle in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) responded to the scene and initiated an investigation into his death. Despite their efforts, the case remained unsolved, prompting authorities to seek public assistance in gathering information.
In February 2017, CMPD renewed their appeal for information regarding Grier's murder.

To encourage tips, CMPD offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case. They assured potential informants that the Crime Stoppers tip line was anonymous, aiming to alleviate concerns about personal safety.
