On November 16, 2017, 41-year-old African American male Jay Jevon Phifer was fatally shot in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. in the 2400 block of Kendall Drive, near West Charlotte High School. Upon arrival, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers found Jay Jevon Phifer suffering from multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
Witnesses reported hearing a rapid succession of gunshots, describing the sound as resembling firecrackers. CMPD officials indicated that the shooters exited a vehicle and opened fire on Jay Jevon Phifer, suggesting he was the intended target. Investigators recovered over 30 shell casings at the scene, including shotgun shells, indicating the use of multiple firearms. The shooting also resulted in two nearby homes being struck by bullets; however, no additional injuries were reported.
The proximity of the shooting to West Charlotte High School prompted a temporary lockdown of the school as a precautionary measure. CMPD emphasized that the incident was not related to the school itself. The shooting took place near a recreation center, but officials stated that the center was not connected to the incident.
As of the latest available information, no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide of Jay Jevon Phifer.
