In a tragic turn of events on May 2, 2026, two brothers, 23-year-old Jaheim Pierre and 28-year-old Gianni Pierre, were fatally shot inside a Miami apartment located in the 5300 block of Northwest 17th Avenue. The two Black male siblings had gone to the apartment to check on their sister due to concerns about a history of domestic violence involving her boyfriend of four years, 31-year-old Antwan Carter.
What began as a protective visit quickly devolved into a heated argument and then a physical altercation between the Pierre brothers and Carter. The fight escalated dramatically when Carter left the apartment to retrieve a handgun from his car.
Surveillance footage from the apartment complex captured Carter returning to the unit and banging on the door, demanding to be let in. Despite their sister's pleas not to open the door, one of the brothers eventually did, at which point Carter allegedly forced his way inside and opened fire. Gianni Pierre was shot while sitting on the couch, and Jaheim Pierre was hit as he ran towards his sister, collapsing on top of her. The sound of at least ten gunshots echoed through the building, a chilling testament to the violence that unfolded. Emergency services were called to the scene, but Jaheim was pronounced dead inside the apartment. Gianni was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
In the immediate aftermath, Carter was quickly apprehended by police who had arrived at the complex. According to police reports, Carter approached the officers and confessed, stating, "I'm the one. I have the firearm." He was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Following the shooting, Carter allegedly said to his girlfriend, "See what you made me do?". Carter appeared in bond court where a judge ordered him to be held without bond. He has since entered a written plea of not guilty to the charges against him. The case remains in the early stages of the legal process, with Carter in custody awaiting trial for the deaths of the two brothers who lost their lives while trying to protect their sister.
