In the quiet hours of an early spring evening in Buffalo, New York, the life of 21-year-old Jihad Gibbs was tragically cut short. On Monday, April 6, 2026, at approximately 9:30 p.m., police responded to a call on the 200 block of Walden Avenue. There they found Gibbs with severe injuries. He was quickly transported to Erie County Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his wounds.
It was later determined that Gibbs had been fatally shot.
The investigation into the death of Jihad Gibbs swiftly led authorities to a suspect. In the early morning hours of Tuesday, April 7, 2026, around 12:52 a.m., police officers spotted a vehicle being operated by Angel Gonzalez-Rondon, 22, of Cheektowaga, near Broadway and Bailey Avenue in Buffalo. When they attempted to pull the vehicle over, Gonzalez-Rondon allegedly sped off, leading to a high-speed chase. The pursuit came to an end on Harlem Road in West Seneca, where he reportedly attempted to flee on foot before being taken into custody.
Following the arrest, the Erie County District Attorney's Office announced that Angel Gonzalez-Rondon had been arraigned on a series of charges. These include one count of Murder in the 2nd Degree, one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd Degree, one count of Reckless Endangerment in the 2nd Degree, one count of Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle in the 3rd Degree, one count of Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the 3rd Degree, one count of Reckless Driving, and seven other vehicle and traffic law violations. Prosecutors accuse Gonzalez-Rondon of fatally shooting Jihad Gibbs with an illegal firearm. He is currently being held without bail and faces a maximum sentence of 25-years-to-life in prison if convicted of the charges brought against him.
