A young man's remains are found next to railroad tracks near the Hudson River
On a cold winter day, the quiet community of Beacon, New York, was disturbed by a grim discovery. The body of Gilberto Sarmiento, a 25-year-old Hispanic male, was found alongside the Metro-North railroad tracks on January 13, 1995. An investigation revealed he had been shot to death. This discovery marked the tragic end to a search that began months earlier.
Gilberto was last seen by his family on July 17, 1994, in his hometown of Washingtonville, New York. Two days after he was last seen, his 1986 Isuzu Trooper was found abandoned in the parking lot of Gully's Restaurant on Front Street in the nearby city of Newburgh. The discovery of his vehicle, miles from where his body would eventually be found, deepened the mystery surrounding his disappearance.
At the time of his death, Sarmiento was described as a recent graduate of Pace University with a degree in finance and a dedicated bodybuilder. He had a mustache, a scar on his upper lip, and an earring in his left ear. When his remains were discovered, he was wearing yellow shorts, a white T-shirt, blue-grey Nike sneakers, and a purple baseball cap with 'Albany State' written across the front.
Despite the circumstances of his death, no suspects have ever been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in the case. The investigation into the homicide of Gilberto Sarmiento remains open and is considered a cold case.
