On the evening of July 21, 2025, in the city of Beacon, New York, a 911 call was placed by 52-year-old Edison Irizarry, a retired City of Beacon Police Officer. In the call, he stated that he had shot his roommate. When police arrived at the Rombout Avenue residence, they found 58-year-old Casey Wilbur Cuddy, a male, deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.
The investigation was turned over to the New York State Police due to Irizarry's history with the local police department.
Casey Cuddy was a psychiatric nurse practitioner who was described by neighbors as outgoing and talkative. He had lived in the first-floor apartment for a couple of years. Irizarry, who had been a police officer for 17 years before retiring in 2021, had reportedly only moved into the apartment with Cuddy two months prior to the incident. During his 911 call, Irizarry claimed that Cuddy had threatened him with a shotgun, leading him to fire his own weapon. Investigators later determined Cuddy was shot with a 9-millimeter semi-automatic pistol.
Edison Irizarry was taken into custody and charged with Murder in the Second Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Firearm. He was arraigned in the City of Beacon Court where he pleaded not guilty. Following the arraignment, he was remanded to the Dutchess County Jail without bail. The case is ongoing, and a mental health evaluation for Irizarry was ordered.
