In a tragic turn of events on April 11, 2026, Latrell Williams, a 30-year-old man from Alsip, Illinois, was shot and killed in a brazen drive-by shooting in the neighboring suburb of Oak Forest. The incident unfolded around 4:47 p.m. at the busy intersection of 167th Street and Cicero Avenue, sending shockwaves through the community. Williams was stopped in the median lane of the intersection when another vehicle pulled up alongside him. An occupant of the other car then opened fire, striking Williams multiple times on the left side of his body. His girlfriend, who was in the passenger seat at the time, was unharmed but witnessed the horrifying event.

Following the shooting, the suspects' vehicle was seen fleeing eastbound on 167th Street, heading towards Interstate 57. An off-duty medical professional who was nearby rendered aid to Williams before he was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The Oak Forest Police Department, in conjunction with the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force and other law enforcement agencies, immediately launched an intensive investigation.

The investigation quickly led to the identification of two suspects: 32-year-old Edward Bass and 30-year-old Khalil Powell, both from Chicago. Surveillance and license plate reader cameras captured the suspects' vehicle following Williams' car shortly before the fatal encounter. Bass was arrested the day of the shooting, and Powell was taken into custody the following day. Both men have since been charged with first-degree murder. Prosecutors allege that Bass was the gunman who fired a semiautomatic handgun into Williams' vehicle, while Powell is accused of being the driver of the getaway car. Bass and Powell were scheduled for a pretrial release hearing at the Bridgeview Courthouse.
