In the early afternoon of Saturday, April 11, 2026, tragedy struck in a Pontiac, Michigan neighborhood. Kevonte Javon Smith, a 28-year-old man, was found lying in a driveway in the 100 block of Crystal Lake Drive at approximately 2:15 p.m. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the back and was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident unfolded during what authorities have described as an apparent robbery.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing the assailant flee on foot immediately
after the shooting. This prompted a swift and extensive search by the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, which deployed a K9 unit and drones to scour the area. The comprehensive effort quickly yielded results. Within about three hours of the fatal shooting, law enforcement located and arrested a suspect at a residence on Spokane Drive in Pontiac. Investigators also successfully recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the crime, as well as the clothing worn by the suspect. Authorities revealed that the victim and the alleged perpetrator were acquainted with each other.
The suspect was identified as 36-year-old Jonathan Mack, also of Pontiac. At the time of the incident, Mack was on probation for a drug conviction and had a prior prison record for an unarmed robbery conviction from 2016. Following his arrest, the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office charged Mack with a slate of felonies: first-degree murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, discharging a firearm in or at a building, carrying a concealed weapon, and three counts of felony firearm.
Jonathan Mack was arraigned at the 50th District Court and, due to the severity of the charges, was denied bond. A conviction for first-degree murder in Michigan carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Further legal proceedings were scheduled, with a probable cause conference set for late April and a preliminary examination slated for May 5.
