In Deming, New Mexico, a lengthy manhunt for two fugitives from Indiana came to a violent end on Thursday, April 23, 2026. Cassondra Sauber, a 42-year-old female, was discovered deceased alongside her companion, 44-year-old Joseph McDowell, inside a residence on West Pine Street. Both had what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds, following a tense standoff with federal authorities.
The couple had been on the run since 2020, wanted on nationwide extradition warrants for a series of grave charges originating in Steuben County, Indiana.
The chain of events leading to the discovery began early that Thursday morning when the U.S. Marshals Service, acting on information that had led them to the small New Mexico city just 35 miles from the Mexican border, attempted to serve the warrants. As deputies breached the door of the residence, they were met with armed resistance from McDowell, who was wielding a rifle. At least one deputy discharged their weapon in the initial confrontation, after which McDowell barricaded himself and Sauber inside the home. This initiated a standoff, with law enforcement establishing a perimeter and issuing repeated commands for the couple to surrender peacefully.
After a period of no response from within the residence, law enforcement deployed a drone and a robot to assess the situation safely. The remote equipment located the bodies of both McDowell and Sauber inside the home. Their deaths are being investigated as a murder-suicide, though the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau has taken the lead in the inquiry due to the involvement of an officer-involved shooting. The charges that had kept the pair on the run for years included multiple counts of child molestation, child exploitation, and possession of child pornography. No law enforcement officers were injured during the operation.
