On the afternoon of April 7, 2026, a violent encounter in Olivehurst, California, resulted in the death of 47-year-old Octavio Montano Navarro. The incident began shortly before 3 p.m. when the Yuba County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call about a man attempting to force his way into a residence on Fleming Way. The suspect, identified as 36-year-old David Lopez Martinez, successfully broke into Navarro's home and fired a handgun multiple times, fatally wounding him.
Several of Navarro's family members, including young children, were present in the home at the time of the shooting but were not injured and did not appear to be the intended targets.
Law enforcement located Martinez approximately a block away from the crime scene. He refused to comply with deputies' commands and barricaded himself inside another residence on Ninth Avenue, leading to a lengthy standoff. The situation prompted a significant police presence, including the deployment of a SWAT team. After several hours of negotiations, deputies utilized less-lethal diversionary devices and took Martinez into custody. Witnesses in the vicinity reported hearing the loud noises from these devices, which were initially mistaken for gunfire.
Investigators have determined that Martinez and Navarro were acquaintances who lived near each other. However, the motive for the deadly shooting remains under investigation. Authorities have stated there is currently no evidence to suggest the incident was gang-related. A toxicology report for Martinez is pending, which investigators hope will provide more insight into the circumstances of the crime. David Lopez Martinez was arrested and booked into the Yuba County Jail on a homicide charge, along with other felony charges.
