In the early hours of a Saturday morning, the life of 48-year-old Dwayne Maurice Darden, a Black/African American male, was cut short following a violent altercation in Denton, Texas. Just after 12:40 a.m. on March 14, 2026, police responded to a shooting call in the 400 block of E. Prairie Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered Darden lying in the middle of the street with a gunshot wound to his chest. Lifesaving measures were started by the officers until medics could take over and transport him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Witnesses at the scene provided police with a harrowing account of the events that led to the fatal shooting. According to their reports, a man identified as 39-year-old Edwin Cain approached Darden in the street, and the two began to argue. The verbal dispute quickly escalated into a physical fight.
During this altercation, a second individual, 20-year-old Joy Jones, reportedly got out of a vehicle and fired a gun multiple times, striking Darden. Witnesses also informed investigators that there had been previous incidents between Darden and the two suspects.
Following the shooting, Cain and Jones fled the scene, but they were soon located and apprehended by Denton police officers. Both Edwin Cain and Joy Jones were arrested and booked into the City of Denton Jail. They have each been charged with murder in connection with Dwayne Maurice Darden's death. Bond had not yet been set for either suspect.
